Why You Should Drink More Water To reduce Back Pain, Avoid Injuries & Perform Better
Water is essential for life, but most don’t realise how important it is for reducing back pain, as well as helping to avoid injury and to enhance sports performance.
Hydration helps your joints, muscles, bones and other tissues stay lubricated and healthy. Cartilage, which cushions your joints, is mostly water. If you are dehydrated, water is drawn away from your tissues including your cartilage, which becomes less effective and your joints suffer more stress, increased inflammation and reduced efficiency.
Water also helps reduce inflammation in your body, which is a common cause of back pain. Water flushes out toxins and waste products that can trigger inflammation, and delivers nutrients and oxygen to your cells. By drinking enough water, you can help your body heal faster and prevent further damage.
Water also affects your performance in physical activities. Water regulates your body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and metabolism. It also aids transport of glucose and electrolytes to your muscles, which are needed for energy and muscle contraction. If you are dehydrated, you will feel tired, crampy, dizzy and unfocused. You will also be more prone to overheating.
The amount of water you need depends on various factors such as weight, height, age, environment and activity levels. A general guideline is to drink a very minimum of 2 litres (8 glasses) of water per day. You may need more if you exercise a lot, sweat a lot or live in a hot or dry climate. You can also get water from most foods that you eat particularly fruits, vegetables, soups and teas.
Tea and coffee do count as hydration/water, however you should only consider around 70% of caffeinated drinks as water due to the diuretic effect of caffeine.
Some signs that you are dehydrated are:
- Dark or strong-smelling urine
- Dry mouth or lips
- Thirst of course, but also hunger
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Irritability
- Confusion
If you have any of these symptoms, drink some water as soon as possible and seek medical attention if necessary.
Drinking enough water every day is one of the easiest and most effective ways to aid in relieving back pain. By staying hydrated, you can help your body function optimally and prevent many common problems. So grab a glass of water now and enjoy the benefits!
