Why I Chose to Become a Pilates Instructor: A Journey from Pain to Performance
Have you ever wondered why someone would leave their established career to pursue something entirely different? Why would someone choose to transform their personal passion into a profession? Today, I’m here to answer those questions by sharing my personal journey of becoming a Pilates instructor.
I was once part of the bustling world of financial services, navigating a 14-year long career. However, a lingering back pain began to overshadow my professional and personal life, impacting my physical and mental wellbeing. That’s when I discovered Pilates, or rather, Pilates discovered me.
The Turning Point: Discovering Pilates
To be honest I did not enjoy Pilates all that much to begin with. And after some initial sessions I wasn’t sure if things were getting better or worse! But one of the benefits of Pilates is learning to tune in to and listen to your body. Once I discovered this, it was game changing.
With regular practice, and once I got consistent, I noticed significant improvements not just in my back pain, but also in my overall physical performance. I felt stronger, more mobile and flexible, and even started seeing improvements in my sports performance as I began to return to rugby and weight training.
The impact on every day life was also incredible. Sneezing had been an issue for some time, I’d have to assume the brace position and hope for the best. That quickly became history along with various other issues I faced in day-to-day life. Like putting on my socks 🧦😂
The holistic approach of Pilates intrigued me. It wasn’t just about physical fitness, but also about creating a balance between the body and mind. However, we don’t meditate and there doesn’t seem to be any sort of “spiritual” element to it. It is very much functional, but by focusing on your body and breathing as you perform the controlled exercises has a significantly beneficial effect on the mind. The more I practiced Pilates, the more I learned and the more I enjoyed it.
This experience led me to question – why not share this with others in a similar position? Why not help others discover the transformative power of Pilates?
From a Practitioner to an Instructor
And so, I embarked on a new journey – from being a Pilates practitioner to becoming an instructor. I bid farewell to my financial services career and embraced the world of health and wellbeing. And trust me, it has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
The Benefits of Pilates
So why Pilates? Here are some benefits that convinced me to dive deep into this practice:
1. Strengthens Core: Pilates focuses on strengthening your core, which is crucial for overall fitness, wellbeing, and can help alleviate back pain.
2. Improves Mobility & Flexibility: It helps increase your flexibility & movement, leading to better mobility and less injuries.
3. Enhances Mind-Body Connection: Pilates encourages mindfulness and enhances the connection between your body and brain.
4. Boosts Sports Performance: Regular practice can lead to improved sports performance due to better movement abilities, and less likely occurrence of injuries – as it did in my case.
5. Promotes Overall Well-being: Beyond physical benefits, Pilates promotes overall well-being by reducing stress and improving mental health.
While Pilates can be a brilliant tool for beating back pain and recovering from injuries, it’s important to consult with a health professional if you’re experiencing any significant symptoms or pain before starting an exercise routine. Just to go through general checks there’s nothing going on that needs further attention.
My journey from a Pilates practitioner to an instructor has been filled with self-discovery, healing, and transformation. I invite you to join me on this journey and discover the power of Pilates for yourself. Trust me; it’s worth it!
