Stability? What Does That Even Mean?
Pilates is a form of exercise that trains your body and mind and aids in improving the mind-body connection. It involves performing precise and controlled movements that challenge your core muscles, strengthens your whole body, improves your co-ordination, mobility, posture, STABILITY and increases your flexibility (and more). But what is stability in Pilates, and why is it important?
Stability in Pilates refers to several things but can be summarised in one sentence in my opinion. One key example of stability is the ability to maintain a neutral spine and pelvis while moving your arms, legs, or both. It sounds simple, but it’s not easy. It requires strength and control of your muscles, especially the ones in your core. Stability also requires concentration and awareness of your body and breathing.
Stability in Pilates is crucial for getting the most out of your workouts. It helps you to avoid injuries, as it protects your joints and spine from unnecessary stress. It also helps you to perform better, as it enhances your coordination, balance, and alignment. Stability in Pilates can also benefit you in everyday life, as it improves your posture, movement efficiency, and confidence.
Another example of stability is joint stability, think of standing on one leg, challenging your balance, but also the stability at your foot, ankle, knee and hip, as well as the broader pelvis, ribcage, spine, shoulders etc
I believe that stability is quite simply having strength and being able to maintain control of your body. If you can isolate, stabilise, and move various limbs, your spine, pelvis and other parts of your body, with control and strength, then everything is better. Mobility increases, you’re less likely to get injured or suffer chronic pain, your performance in sports or daily tasks improves or gets easier.
