Does Pilates Really Work?
As a Pilates instructor, I often get asked: does Pilates really work? It’s a fair question. After all, the science is quite clear that Pilates meets the mark when it comes to most of its claimed benefits. But I understand the scepticism. Many Pilates instructors have not personally experienced back pain, haven’t seen a tangible improvement in their sports performance, or had an improvement in their posture. They just love Pilates, so they teach Pilates.
But here’s where my story diverges. I am almost the opposite in every way. Not naturally long, lean, or particularly flexible, I’ve worked hard to make significant improvements to my back pain and physical abilities. Pilates has been a crucial part of that journey.
My Personal Experience With Pilates
Before I began my Pilates journey, back pain was ruling my life. It was a constant, nagging presence, stopping me from doing the things I loved. From weight lifting and rugby, to everyday tasks like putting my socks on, my back pain was always there, casting a shadow over my activities.
Many people had suggested Pilates, doctors, physiotherapists, and even a spinal consultant. I had tried to begin Pilates a few times but at first, I was sceptical. I found it awkward and inaccessible. Could these controlled movements and body weight exercises really make a difference? But I decided to give it a go, knuckle down and get consistent. And I’m so glad I did.
How Pilates Changed My Life
Pilates didn’t just help me manage my back pain; it transformed my whole life. I started noticing changes gradually. The pain that once dominated my life began to recede. I found myself able to do things that I hadn’t been able to do for years. I noticed the everyday activities were getting easier, then I was back to weight lifting, then back to rugby!
But the changes didn’t stop there. Not only did Pilates bring me back from the brink of chronic pain, but it also improved my sports performance. I found myself stronger, more flexible, and more mobile. I was moving better. My core strength improved dramatically which improved every aspect of my training, activities and life.
The Power of Pilates
So, does Pilates really work? From my personal experience, the answer is a resounding yes. It worked for me, and it’s worked for hundreds of people either my members face to face, online or in local gyms where I deliver regular sessions. But don’t just take my word for it. The science backs it up too. Studies have shown that Pilates can provide relief from back pain.
Pilates is more than just a workout. It’s a comprehensive approach to health and wellness. It’s a tool that can help you reclaim your life from chronic pain, improve your physical abilities, and enjoy the activities you love. So why not give it a try? You might be surprised at the difference it can make.
Remember, every journey begins with a single step. Why not let that step be a Pilates class?
