3 Mistakes People Make When Using Pilates for Back Pain
If you’re using Pilates to help with your back pain, you’re absolutely on the right track. It can be genuinely life-changing. But — and there is a but — I see the same three mistakes over and over again that hold people back from getting the results they really want.
So, let’s get into them.
Mistake 1: Expecting Quick Fixes
This one’s a biggie. Doing a class once a week (some weeks, not even every week), and then wondering why your back still hurts… it’s just not going to cut it.
Think of it like going for a couple of runs and expecting to lose two stone and be ready for a marathon. We all know it doesn’t work like that — and Pilates is no different.
If you’re dealing with back pain, think longer term. Give it 6 to 12 weeks of regular practice — that’s 2 to 4 sessions a week — and then take stock. That’s when you’ll start to notice change. We’re building resilience, strength, and better movement habits — and that takes time.
Mistake 2: Only Doing Your Weekly Class
This is where life gets in the way. You’ve got kids, work, pets, traffic, unexpected stuff — we all do. So if you’re relying just on your weekly Pilates class and nothing in between… you’re going to struggle with consistency.
Even 10–15 minutes a few times a week at home makes a huge difference. It keeps things ticking over and keeps your back moving. You don’t need to do hour-long workouts — little and often is far more realistic (and effective) for most people.
Mistake 3: Not Progressing Things Over Time
I totally get this one — when you’ve had back pain, it’s easy to get a bit cautious. Maybe you’ve been told to go easy, or avoid certain movements altogether. And yes, early on, you absolutely need to respect where you’re at.
But you can’t stay stuck there.
Progressive overload isn’t just for the gym crowd. Overcoming back pain through movement means gradually increasing what your body can handle — adding a bit more challenge, a bit more control, over time. That’s where real improvement comes from.
Final Thoughts
So if you’ve been giving Pilates a go for your back pain and not seeing much change, ask yourself:
Am I being consistent enough?
Am I doing anything outside of my weekly class?
Am I nudging things forward, even just a little?
Back pain recovery doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need commitment. It’s not about being perfect — it’s about showing up, regularly, and making progress where you can.
Remember, stand tall, move often, and prioritise self-care. If you have any questions or insights to share, I’d love to hear from you!
